TD Berlin: WINTER TRIP

"Serengeti must not die!" And the people who live there? The experiential performance offers a 360° view of safari tourism, national parks and related conflicts. FLINN WORKS (Berlin) and ASEDEVA (Dar es Salaam) act as safari guides using lecture and VR glasses to lead the audience on a final, light-hearted journey into the abysmal world of wildlife conservation.

National parks and wildlife conservation are widely regarded as unqualifiedly good achievements. But their origins lie in violent colonial appropriation. Safari tourism is the main source of income for quite a few African states, while at the same time most national parks exclude the local population, depriving them of their livelihoods.

High-tech equipment and armed rangers are an effective tool against illegal ivory trade and poaching, but life-threatening for nomadic pastoralists. Trophy hunting by white hunters is still considered a viable funding model for wildlife sanctuaries. Donor-funded conservation organizations step in where government agencies fail, but they also serve as a business model and disrupt proven local forms of conservation. The ensemble accompanies the audience through the economic conflicts between local people, cash-rich hunting and photography tourists*, and international conservation organizations.
