Indian food in Berlin
India is often referred to as a subcontinent. This suggests that Indian cuisine is not only very diverse, but also very special. If you look at India's geographical location on the map, you realize the full size of the country: from the Himalayas in the north to the Indian Ocean in the south. In addition, there is the cultural diversity of the religions and castes, which have their individual preparation and spice traditions (mostly oriental) and the influences of the colonial powers (western and occidental). The combination of both styles results in interesting and experimental combinations, which are mainly to be found in modern Indian restaurants.
In such a multicultural and vibrant city as Berlin, you will of course find a large number of Indian restaurants - from simple snacks to the higher priced Indian restaurant.
The Indian restaurants can be characterized in the kitchen direction analogous to China: by the cardinal points. In the north a lot of meat is served (lamb, goat). The main spices include cumin and saffron. Ghee (high quality clarified butter) also comes from this region. In the south, on the other hand, due to the subtropical climate, rice, coconut and their milk dominate the dishes and curries seasoned with ginger, garlic, red and green chilli. In East India you spice more cautiously, eat more sweets instead and in West India you spice up strongly, eat a lot of fish and vegetables.
Depending on the origin of the owner or the cook, in Berlin you will find Indian classics such as lamb skewers, curries of all kinds, chicken, panir fresh cheese, Raita and Lassi, guaranteed also specialities from the Indian homeland!
