Varieté in Berlin
The Variety embodies the compact entertainment art of acting, dance, music, artistry and acrobatics as well as magic and illusions. Variety programmes are always colourful, varied and entertaining. Depending on the author, the performance may be a coherent story or several individual performances, loosely lined up next to each other. Since a variety show is almost an interplay of theatre and circus, it is almost exclusively comedic content that determines what happens. And of course a comprehensive gastronomic service is also part of a successful evening.
In the Golden Twenties it had its heyday in Germany - until the outbreak of World War II. In the following years, and especially in the period of the economic miracle, the Variety theatre never gained this importance again. The Hansa-Theater in Hamburg was the last intact Varieté in West Germany until 2001 and again from 2009 onwards. In the GDR, of course under state leadership, some Varieté were continued. The two best known, still active and very popular today, are the Steintor-Varieté in Halle/Saale and the Friedrichstadt-Palast.
The other big ones Berliner Varieté were only founded or reopened after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, when some of them were already in play earlier: Wintergarten, Neue Berliner Scala, Chameleon, Scheinbar, Bar jeder Vernunft and the Tipi - Tent at the Chancellery.
