A tragic farce by Edna St. Vincent Millay

Two shepherds are tending a peacefully grazing flock of sheep. For a change, they suggest a game: "We draw a line and say what's on this side is yours and what's here is mine. And no one is allowed on the other's side." No sooner said than done, they build a wall. What began as a harmless game leads to a bitter dispute.
The playmaker Cothurnus controls the scene. He intervenes when the shepherds deviate from the given text or want to end the game because they realize: "It's a stupid game. Why are we playing it?"

In addition to the three characters borrowed from Greek mythology, Pierrot and Columbine are up to mischief, two figures from commedia dell'arte. They are not interested in the tragic events next door. It is none of their business. The main thing is that the table is always generously laid for them.
By combining two different theatrical styles, the American poet Millay succeeds in posing a timeless and particularly topical question: Who owns the land? And who takes part in what is happening around us?
