American football originates from the eastern states and was held as a competition at the relevant universities as early as 1870. The game is a combination of football, rugby and Candian football. The popularity of this sport grew steadily and led to the founding of the legendary NFL (National Football League) in 1912.
It was only at the end of the 70s that the trend spread to Europe and the German era began with the Frankfurt Lions and the Düsseldorf Panthers. Today 14 teams play in the first German league, the German Football League GFL. This of course includes the Berlin Adler!
The AFC Berlin Adler e.V. - that's our capital club! The history of this relatively young sport in Germany goes back a long way. The Adler were one of the founding teams of the 1st Bundesliga in 1979. Almost every year since then has been marked by one or more major successes.
