Umberto Giordano - Dramma di ambiente storico in four acts - Libretto by Luigi Illica!
Albeit seldom performed, Umberto Giordano's ANDREA CHENIER is one of the most impressive works from the circle of the so-called "verismo", a style of Italian opera that emphasized naturalistic elements not only in the choice of subject but also in the musical development.
The main character, the poet André Chénier, is designed according to a historical model, the climate of the French Revolution in its alternation of horror and pathos very theatrically effective worked out. The triangular story between the poet, Gérard and the young Madeleine becomes all the more touching against this backdrop. "The director John Dew succeeds in depicting the inner topicality of the play in an amazing way without violent external actualization. (Nürnberger Zeitung)

On November 7, 1912, the Deutsches Opernhaus was inaugurated with FIDELIO and, in the following decades, served as a stage especially for Puccini's and Wagner's works. The house has remained faithful to the democratic ideal of a citizen opera after its destruction in World War II: Fritz Bornemann's new building, opened in 1961, is intended as a framework for a modern music theatre, which can be experienced from all seats as a total work of art.
