Richard Wagner - Dresden Version - Romantic Opera in Three Elevations!
Tannhäuser longs to return to his earthly life from the realm of Venus. Only with the call of the Virgin Mary does he succeed in escaping from the goddess. Hermann von Thüringen and his knightly hunting party welcome the long lost. The prospect of meeting his beloved Elisabeth moves him to return home.
The essence of love is to be fathomed in a competition of singers at Wartburg Castle. The invited singers sing of the purity of feeling, but Tannhäuser praises the passion of Venus. The open confession of lust brings society into turmoil; one wants to take action against Tannhäuser with weapons, but Elisabeth, although injured herself, protects his life.
The Landgrave imposes a trip of penance on Tannhäuser to Rome. The pilgrims, however, return without Tannhäuser; only he alone has not attained papal forgiveness. He is threatened with eternal damnation, which he hopes to escape by returning to Venus. The invocation of Elisabeth's name lets him come to his senses again - in the face of her death his torn soul now also finds redemption.

Info: Deutsche Oper Berlin
On November 7, 1912, the Deutsches Opernhaus was inaugurated with FIDELIO and, in the following decades, served as a stage especially for Puccini's and Wagner's works. The house has remained faithful to the democratic ideal of a citizen opera after its destruction in World War II: Fritz Bornemann's new building, opened in 1961, is intended as a framework for a modern music theatre, which can be experienced from all seats as a total work of art.
