Café in Berlin

Cafés are an integral part of Berlin's street scene! As soon as the first rays of sunlight are shining, locals and tourists are drawn to the terraces and street cafés. In order to make it possible for our guests to get their permission in spring, sometimes even on mild and sunny winter days, blankets and pillows are handed out and the places in the sun are quickly occupied!
The term Café originates from Arabic (quawa) and in our usage does not refer to the delicious drinks, but to the place where mainly coffee was served, later it was called a coffee house. The first of these houses were in the Middle East, the Ottoman Empire - today Syria and Egypt. The first cafés came to Europe via Turkey. It seems astonishing to us today that we always associate Austria closely with the coffee house tradition, but already decades before the coffee houses established themselves in Bremen and Hamburg.
But what has manifested itself over the centuries in Austria is the term coffee house. In the other German-speaking countries we speak of cafés. In these you will find coffee specialities as well as other drinks, cakes, snacks and small meals, as well as an offer of daily newspapers and magazines... The tables are usually small with a maximum of four chairs to create a nice atmosphere and to make the stay pleasant for guests who are travelling alone.
