Gaetano Donizetti - Dramma tragico in three acts - Libretto by Salvadore Cammarano!
Donizetti's probably most famous tragic opera goes back to Sir Walter Scott's popular novel of 1819: The Bride of Lammermoor. Salvatore Cammarano took a radical path in his libretto, not only neglecting the political preconditions of the conflict between the Ashtons and Ravenswoods and banishing the entire prehistory to a few hints in the dialogues, but also reducing the complex network of relationships of the novel to the conflicts between Enrico Ashton, his sister Lucia and her lover Edgardo.
Director and outfitter Filippo Sanjust's production is set at the time the work was written (1835). An intermediate curtain with a painted flowing royal blue curtain and a girl wandering in a ghostly fluttering robe suggests the romantic theatre space. The stage sets are reminiscent of reprints of old books. The black robes, red sashes, white collars, feather bushes and cuffs of the Scottish men form a colourful contrast - and an appropriate frame for one of the main works of Italian bel canto.

On November 7, 1912, the Deutsches Opernhaus was inaugurated with FIDELIO and, in the following decades, served as a stage especially for Puccini's and Wagner's works. The house has remained faithful to the democratic ideal of a citizen opera after its destruction in World War II: Fritz Bornemann's new building, opened in 1961, is intended as a framework for a modern music theatre, which can be experienced from all seats as a total work of art.
