by Susanne Kerckhoff concertante talks
A woman living in devastated post-war Berlin writes to her Jewish childhood friend who emigrated to Paris during the Nazi era. The questions she raises in the letter become a self-accusation and an examination of conscience. In this almost lost work, Susanne Kerckhoff also describes everyday life at the time in direct and touching observations.
The epistolary novel - inspired by a reading and brief classification - becomes the starting point for 10 artists to question history from their own biographical perspectives - in the prism of today's Berlin and their respective creative contexts and living environments - and also to locate Kerckhoff's poetic and ethical positions in the light of the present.
Published in 1948 in the midst of the Nuremberg Trials and newly presented by the publisher Das kulturelle Gedächtnis, the epistolary novel addresses the issues of followership, repression and the Germans' denial of guilt for the crimes committed during the National Socialist era. Kerckhoff asks about the necessary intellectual reorientation - in the light of fundamental humanitarian issues and their conditions.
