Grand Opéra in five acts - Libretto Eugène Scribe, Gaetano Rossi & Emile Deschamps!

With his HUGENOTTEN in 1836, Giacomo Meyerbeer brought one of the greatest massacres in European history to the opera stage: the attempt by French Catholics to murder all Protestants in the country on Bartholomew's night in 1572 is still one of the most terrible examples of the effects of religious fanaticism. The fact that DIE HUGENOTTEN became Meyerbeer's most famous opera is not only due to the spectacular theme, but also to the relentlessness with which he tells this story: From the fragile peace between the denominations to the futile attempts at conciliation and the organisation of the crime in the famous "sword consecration" to the indiscriminate slaughter of the Huguenots, the opera exemplifies the development of a catastrophe.

In linking the fate of the two lovers Raoul and Valentine with the historical event of the Bartholomew's Night, the HUGENOTTEN became both a model for the new genre Grand Opéra and one of the most effective works in opera history.

Info: Deutsche Oper Berlin

On November 7, 1912, the Deutsches Opernhaus was inaugurated with FIDELIO and, in the following decades, served as a stage especially for Puccini's and Wagner's works. The house has remained faithful to the democratic ideal of a citizen opera after its destruction in World War II: Fritz Bornemann's new building, opened in 1961, is intended as a framework for a modern music theatre, which can be experienced from all seats as a total work of art.

Smooth buying of tickets with friendly staff. Grandiose places and a wonderful bizarre performance (Salome)!
What I didn't know until then: On the day of the performance there must be a valid get2card. Not (only) on the day of purchase.
(I had a sample get2card for 3 months at the first attempt to buy the cards.)
